McMurdo Station,Antarctica: For FS2004

By: Julian M. Avisenis

Features:

* Includes mesh scenery for the whole of Ross Island. McMurdo Station is located on the southern end of Ross Island, at Hut Point. Observation Hill and some of the other hills are totally absent in the default scenery, as is the Erebus Tongue Glacier. See screenshots - the "before and after" ones are taken from exactly the same positions.

* A large part of the Ross Ice Shelf is included (absent in the default scenery, thus when flying approaches to some of these runways, they appear to be situated on water. They then gradually "slide" back towards the land the nearer one approaches. See the enclosed screenshots).

* Includes new land class scenery. The default scenery has trees on mount Erebus. There are generally no trees on Ross Island at all, so I have removed them. I have also tried to make the land class a little less repetitive and closer in appearance to the real situation. (It would have used a massive amount of hard drive space if Microsoft had provided correct and detailed scenery for every bit of Antarctica.)

* McMurdo Station itself has been depicted as accurately as I am able to do without spending months making unique new scenery objects. Many of the buildings at the station are purpose-built on site and do not resemble "standard" scenery. I have made extensive use of EZ-scenery and Runway12 objects to give as realistic an overall effect as possible. The default objects are insufficient for this. The default scenery does not depict McMurdo station at all. See screenshots.

* Three runways are present, NZIR - the "Ice Runway", NZWD - "Willy's Field" and NZPG - "Pegasus Field". Minor changes have been made to these. Coordinates and lengths are unchanged from the default, so there is no need to change AI traffic patterns for those who have such addons. Two AFCAD files are included in the scenery. The most important is NZIR because it also contains the "roads" of McMurdo Station. The second is NZWD. Unfortunately if you try to land on the default NZWD which is raised 40ft above the surrounding surface, you may find that you go right through it, only to land on a "second" runway 40ft below the top one! I have corrected this by removing the top runway. It would have been more correct to keep the top one instead, but the overall appearance of the raised runway is not too good in my opinion. NZPG has been placed on ice rather than on "hardened" water as is the case in the default.

* I have included the Erebus Tongue Glacier in this scenery for added interest. See screenshot.

Installation:

Imortant: Please read and follow these instructions very carefully. I will not be held responsible for any mistakes. This scenery uses both EZ-Scenery and Rwy12 objects. There is also new land class scenery which needs to be added separately. There is more than one possible way of installing this scenery. Choose the one most appropriate to your needs. Experienced simmers, please excuse the lengthy instructions. I am trying to make this fairly complex installation easy for all to use.

1. The prefered method is to first install the full EZ-Scenery and Rwy12 object libraries if you do not already have them. (At SurClaro they are: ezoliv33.zip for EZ-Scenery and rw12l112.zip, rw12l212.zip and rw12l312.zip for Rwy12.) Once installed, you will then have these libraries ready for use with any other addon scenery that may also require them. You will then also avoid duplication of these objects in the future, as they have a tendency to wind up as multiple copies of the same thing scattered throughout your Addon Scenery folder. These object libraries need to be added and activated in FS2004 in much the same way that any other addon scenery would be added and activated. Instructions for this are included in the above EZ-Scenery and Runway12 downloads. If you decide to follow this method, please do so before proceeding to "A" below.
2. Should you decide not to install both (or only one) of these libraries, but want to install only the scenery objects relevant to this McMurdo addon, then proceed to "B" below.

A. Installation where both EZ-Scenery and Runway12 object libraries have already been
fully installed:
1. Start by extracting the zip to a temporary folder.
2. Copy or cut and paste the folder "McMurdo" to your Flight Simulator 9/AddonScenery
folder.
3. Copy or cut and paste the folder "Landclass" to the same Flight Simulator
9/AddonScenery folder.
4. Open the folder "AFCADS".
5. Copy or cut and paste the two files AF2_NZIR and AF2_NZWD to your Flight Simulator
9/AddonScenery/scenery folder.
6. Start FS2004 and go to "SETTINGS".
7. Click on "Scenery Library...".
8. In the "SETTINGS - SCENERY LIBRARY" window, click on the "Add Area" button.
9. In the "Select Scenery Directory" window, find and open the "Addon Scenery" folder
within Flight Simulator 9.
10.Select "Landclass" by clicking only once on it (don't open it) and then click the "OK"
button.
11.Repeat steps 8 to 11, but this time select "McMurdo" instead of "Landclass".
12.Exit, restart FS2004, go to one of the runways NZIR, NZWD or NZPG and explore.

B. Installation where only the relevant files are to be installed, i.e. not the full
object libraries:
1. Start by extracting the zip to a temporary folder.
2. Open the folder "Library files". It contains the relevant EZ-Scenery and Runway12
folders.
3. Open whichever (both if you need both) of these two folders you need. You will see that
each contains two subfolders "scenery" and "texture".
4. Open the "McMurdo" folder. It also contains "scenery" and "texture" subfolders.
5. Copy the contents of the EZ-Scenery and/or (as needed) Runway12 "scenery" subfolders to
the "McMurdo/scenery" subfolder.
6. Similarly, copy the contents of the EZ-Scenery and/or (as needed) Runway12 "texture"
subfolders to the "McMurdo/texture" subfolder.
7. Now copy or cut and paste the altered "McMurdo" folder to your Flight Simulator
9/AddonScenery folder.
8. Copy or cut and paste the folder "Landclass" to the same Flight Simulator
9/AddonScenery folder.
9. Open the folder "AFCADS".
10.Copy or cut and paste the two files AF2_NZIR and AF2_NZWD to your Flight Simulator
9/AddonScenery/scenery folder.
11.Start FS2004 and go to "SETTINGS".
12.Click on "Scenery Library...".
13.In the "SETTINGS - SCENERY LIBRARY" window, click on the "Add Area" button.
14.In the "Select Scenery Directory" window, find and open the "Addon Scenery" folder
within Flight Simulator 9.
15.Select "Landclass" by clicking only once on it (don't open it) and then click the "OK"
button.
16.Repeat steps 13 to 15, but this time select "McMurdo" instead of "Landclass".
17.Click OK, exit, restart FS2004, go to one of the runways NZIR, NZWD or NZPG and
explore.

Known Issues:
1.You are likely to notice that the scenery tends to "slide" across the snow. This apparently applies to all scenery situated close to the poles. I understand that it is caused by trying to fit "rectangular" scenery onto converging lines of longitude as these lines approach the poles, and is therefore a problem integral to FS2004. I have tried to minimize the effect by placing the scenery on a homogenous background of snow, so that any movement is not so obvious. Unfortunately, as far as I know, the problem cannot be totally eliminated. If anyone knows of a better solution, please let me know and I will try to implement it.

Legal and contact:

This scenery is freeware. It is not to be used in whole or part for profit. It may not be altered for redistribution. You may upload it in its complete form to another flight simulator site, provided there is no charge for use of that site or the uploaded scenery. I will not accept any responsibility for any damage, real or perceived, that may affect your computer as a result of use of this scenery. I would be happy to help (my time permitting) with problems related to this scenery, and I would be especially happy to receive constructive comments. This is my first attempt at producing scenery. (I should have chosen an easier one!)
